Schools for delinquents in England are called Borstal Institutions, and Behan's account of his years as a "Borstal Boy. "Borstal Boy" (the book) is a classic example of great Irish storytelling. Some fact mixed with a bit of exaggeration and a dollop of warmth told with a wonderful manipulation of language to bring you to the final destination of truth and awakening. All best done while having a pint of Guiness or Stout.

Borstal Boy chronicles his time in juvenile detention and his time both among the prisoners and with the guards. After Behan’s untimely death from alcoholism, the book was adapted into a play that debuted at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in and went on to win a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award in and a Tony Award that same year. Borstal Boy is both a riveting self-portrait and a window into the problems, passions, and heartbreak of Ireland’s troubled history. Without a doubt the most important book of its kind published this century. —New Statesman. Godine, Publisher is distributed to the trade by Two Rivers Distribution, an Ingram brand.
